The DC Developmental Disabilities Council mourns the loss of Councilmember Amber Keohane. Amber served on the DDC for five years and was a fierce advocate for independent living and peer support. We will miss Amber’s kindness, humor, her intelligent perspective, and her passionate advocacy. Our hearts go out to her family and friends.
"Like many of us, Amber picked up and left Texas to come to DC to have her own life. She was entirely unaware of the DC services system or if she would receive the proper PCA services upon her arrival, but she took that chance to lead her own self-determination and quality of life. For this, I will always have great respect for Amber. May her family and friends receive a warm embrace as we all honor Amber during this time of remembrance and solace." - Mat McCollough, Director of DC Office of Disability Rights
"I always admired Amber's willingness to take risks so she could have the life she wanted. Moving from Texas to DC took a lot of courage and Amber faced a lot of challenges to make it work. I will miss her bravery, kindness, and passion." - Alison Whyte, Executive Director of DC Developmental Disabilities Council
